LEO RAUTINS was born in Toronto, Ontario and is arguably one of the most prominent names in Canadian basketball. He was a star in high school for St. Michael's College School in Toronto and while there, Rautins would make his debut with the Canadian National Team as a 16 year old which is still the youngest player to achieve this honor. Recruited by over 100 NCAA schools, Leo would attend the University of Minnesota for one year before transferring to Syracuse University. As a member of the Syracuse Orangemen he would be the first player ever to record a triple-double in Big East play, accomplishing the feat twice in the span of a month during his senior year. He was named All Big East third team and Honorable Mention All American that year. Rautins was the first Canadian ever drafted in the first round of the NBA draft, going 17th overall to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983. Hampered by knee problems, he would play 32 games in the NBA in 2 years with the Sixers and Atlanta Hawks. Upon retirement, Leo became a basketball commentator, most notably with the NBA's Toronto Raptors TV network. He is a member of Canada's Basketball Hall of Fame and was named Head Coach of the Canadian National Team in February 2005. He resigned from that position in 2011 and currently co-owns the Rautins-House Basketball School which is celebrating its 25th year and is the largest basketball camp in the Ottawa region. |
“Vikta "the voice" Paulo is a renowned sports announcer known for his booming voice and infectious energy. Born in Kenya, Vikta grew up in a hard-working family, that quickly became rooted in the Ottawa community. In 2005, Paulo started announcing games for Vanier College, initially motivated by his desire to watch his friends play basketball from the best seat in the house. Little did he know that this passion would take him on a global journey, providing him with opportunities to work at prestigious sporting events. Despite being self-taught and without any formal training, Paulo's love for sports and enthusiastic personality propelled him to success. Throughout his career, Paulo has had the privilege of being the voice for several teams and events, including the Carleton Ravens, the Algonquin Thunder and Wolves, the Ottawa Blackjacks, the Pan-Am Games, the World Para Powerlifting competition, and the 2016 NBA All-Star Game in Toronto. Despite having countless incredible experiences, Paulo cherishes them all equally, considering each event to be special in its own way. One of Paulo's most memorable experiences was announcing at the 2016 NBA All-Star Game.He had the opportunity to interact with NBA superstars such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Although he wishes he had taken more pictures to commemorate the experience, Paulo fondly recalls the event as a "bucket list" moment. Beyond his career as an announcer, Paulo is a proud father. His 4-year-old daughter holds a special place in his heart, and he describes her as the perfect mix of kindness and competitiveness. Looking towards the future, Paulo hopes to dedicate his career to mentoring aspiring announcers and traveling the world while announcing. His ultimate goal is to announce at the 2024 Summer Paris Olympics, but for now, you can always find him at the Algonquin College ARC on Friday nights, pacing the court with his trademark smile, cracking jokes with players and coaches, and passionately calling the game for his hometown Algonquin Wolves. |
